The website itself contains no information about who runs holysmoke.org or any owner or operator identifying information. The owner uses pope @holysmoke.org as the email address for contact. While some reviews look legitimate, others, such as featured reviews, look suspicious.
If any website owner, or its agent, is placing the reviews, then asking for payment, then a variety of laws are impacted from extortion, to fraud. Section 230 immunity will not provide a defense for websites engaged in this sort of scam. In order to remove a review, you may be asked to pay money to the website owner. This website is a small step in the right direction. A drop in the pond. We cannot alert everyone. We cannot expose every bad business, scammer, cheater and criminal. We understand that. The website terms of service/use also include this interesting notation for anyone wanting to remove a review from the website. Despite this fact, people who end up on HolySmoke.com get contacted by ‘reputation repair’ companies such as defamed.com who solicit money to have posts removed and magically end up having them removed after paying companies such as defamed.com.
