Lia Smith


Lia is an attorney in our Austin, Texas office. Her practice focuses on intellectual property and corporate transactional matters, including licensing, strategic collaborations, commercial transactions, real estate, private equity, company formations, and corporate governance. Lia has represented a diverse set of clients, both public and private, from emerging companies to established institutions. She counsels clients regarding transactions involving complex intellectual property, business, operational, and legal issues, with a focus on patent, copyright, and trademark law, as well as issues related vendor services, supply chain management, and ongoing technology development.

Lia began her legal career as an associate at Cooley in Silicon Valley, practicing patent litigation, and then at Latham & Watkins in Silicon Valley as an associate in that firm’s technology transactions group, where she focused on the representation of public and private companies in the pharmaceutical and biotech fields. She later joined the technology transactions group in the Austin office of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati and counseled technology startups regarding a wide range of intellectual property and commercial issues. Most recently, Lia was an associate at Bissex & Watson in Austin, where she expanded her practice to include corporate transactions and counseling. In representing her clients, Lia continues to draw upon her core understanding of complex technology gained from earning her Computer Science degree.

In counseling her clients, Lia has the benefit of her own experience as an entrepreneur. She has owned and operated two restaurants and is currently developing a video game and growing a creative marketing and branding firm of her own.
